I've seen from my usage statistics that I'm starting to get a modest following on this blog. First of all, thank you for taking an interest in my musings! I hope that you find them interesting - it's certainly fun on my end to put these posts together.
Secondly, I wanted to give a bit of background. Certainly some of you know me personally, but in case you don't, my name is Field Cady, and I'm an applied mathematician (I have degrees in physics/math/cs, I've published some applied math papers, and I pay my bills with doing algorithm consulting - it's as good a title as any). I've been working on a book that I've tentatively titled "What is Math?", arguing that mathematics is best viewed as a branch of language. In the process I try to bring math down to earth a bit and frame it in the context of human society. It's been an extremely fun exercise that has allowed me to explore ideas that have been floating around in my head for a long time. My posts to this blog are, for the most parts, modified excerpts of what I've written so far. I would deeply appreciate any feedback people have - it would help me make the book and blog better.
Again, thank you so much for your interest so far. I hope you enjoy what you read, and please feel free to give me suggestions about how I can make it more interesting.
